Created in 2016 by Françoise Caron for Astier de Villatte, GRAND CHALET was conceived as a tribute to Balthus and his favourite scent. Its inspiration comes from the Grand Chalet in the Swiss Alps and the ancient linden tree beside his studio, two images that guide the fragrance toward a feeling of shelter, filtered light and private memory. Rather than aiming for instant drama, it unfolds with a quiet presence and a painterly sense of balance.
The opening brings together linden blossom, mimosa, green leaves and bergamot. Bergamot introduces a clean citrus brightness, while the green notes suggest cool air and the stillness of an alpine landscape. At the centre of this opening is linden blossom, delicate and softly honeyed, paired with the powdery gentleness of mimosa. The effect is calm and luminous, like stepping into a silent room with daylight falling softly across wood and fabric.
In the heart, heliotrope deepens the scent’s enveloping quality with a tender, velvety nuance. The return of linden blossom and mimosa keeps the structure seamless: this is not a perfume of sharp contrasts, but of continuity and quiet refinement. That smooth development gives the composition its emotional logic, linking floral softness to the artistic world and physical setting that inspired it.
The base of sandalwood, musk, cedarwood and vanilla brings texture without heaviness. Sandalwood and cedarwood provide shape and a dry warmth; musk softens the edges; vanilla rounds everything out with a creamy touch that remains measured. Nothing feels overstated. Instead, the fragrance settles into an atmosphere of intimacy, stillness and composed elegance.
