Created by Jérôme Epinette and launched by Byredo in 2021, MIXED EMOTIONS was conceived to reflect the tumultuous nature of our times and the complexity of our collective emotional landscape. Rather than aiming for easy harmony, it embraces contrast and ambiguity, two distinctly contemporary ideas. The result is a unisex Eau de Parfum with a woody green profile, where freshness and tension move side by side.
The opening brings together blackcurrant and maté. Blackcurrant introduces a dark-fruited brightness with a subtle tart edge, while maté adds an herbal dryness and a gently bitter texture from the very first moments. Together, they keep the composition away from overt sweetness and place it in a sharper, more thoughtful register. It feels immediate yet nuanced, like the quick intake of breath before trying to make sense of a complicated mood.
At the heart, violet leaves and Ceylon black tea deepen that sense of duality. Violet leaves bring a crisp green facet that feels leafy rather than floral, lending the fragrance a clean, flexible structure. Ceylon black tea adds shade, depth and a quietly polished character. This is where the scent becomes more introspective: not only energetic, but composed, carrying that familiar sensation of staying mentally alert while everything around you keeps shifting.
The base of birch wood and papyrus gives MIXED EMOTIONS its dry, slightly smoky signature. These notes do not overwhelm the composition; they define it. They provide a steady, modern framework that extends the dialogue between nature and emotion, momentum and restraint. In this perfume, Byredo offers a particularly lucid reading of the present—one that acknowledges emotional complexity without trying to smooth it over, and turns that tension into something elegant, wearable and deeply current.
