Description

Created by Annick Ménardo for EDP Frédéric Malle and introduced in 2026, Contre Jour begins with the Mediterranean everlasting flower, also known as immortelle, a wildflower prized for its remarkable longevity. From that botanical starting point, the brand frames the fragrance as a manifesto of contrast and creative freedom: a radiant trail that remains elusive, refusing easy definition. That push and pull between clarity and mystery is what gives the composition its distinctive shape.

The opening is built around immortelle, a note that immediately brings a dry, golden, lightly aromatic glow. It does not read as decorative; instead, it feels like a material with a strong point of view, able to evoke warmth, open air, and a sunlit landscape without becoming literal. At the heart, damask rose introduces a more nuanced movement. Rather than softening the fragrance in any predictable way, it broadens the structure with a floral texture that deepens the original idea and adds a more human, almost tactile dimension, poised between tenderness and restraint.

Sandalwood anchors the base with a smooth, quiet presence. Its woody depth does not dim the brightness of the opening, but extends it, giving the scent a composed warmth and a subtle sense of continuity. The aromatic and woody facets meet with unusual ease here: the fragrance evolves through contrast, yet never feels abrupt, as though each note were sharpening the contours of the next.

Contre Jour suggests a mood of lucid calm, a kind of brightness that does not need to announce itself. There is something genuinely free in the way it is constructed: it does not insist on a single identity, but lingers in that refined space where light, texture, and skin are still allowed to shift.
