Tears is a continuation of the work of Tremaine Emory, founder of Denim Tears, focusing on the African diaspora. The brand stated that Tears "translates this work into an olfactory narrative" and solidifies the relationship between Denim Tears and Comme des Garçons.
The Tears campaign was photographed by Dexter Navy in Harlem, Georgia. The location holds special significance for Emory. "There are certain scents I know from spending summers in Harlem, Georgia: the red clay, the morning dew, all of that—the sweat from the heat, all of it—and it all comes together here," he said.
Adrian Joffe, President and CEO of Comme des Garçons, described this unique collaboration.
"True to the collaborative spirit of CDG, there were no brainstorming sessions," he stated. "The work grew out of trust. Tremaine was responsible for the concept and had total freedom to design the beautiful bottle and box. For our part, we worked on creating the fragrance based on his concept, continuing until we achieved something he loved."
